Our School

We're an independent public school in Palmerston

Durack School is a large urban primary school situated in the City of Palmerston, 21km south of Darwin. We are very proud to have been awarded Independent Public School status commencing in 2016. The school opened in January 1998 and is located in the beautiful suburb of Durack. The school and suburb were named after the pioneering family, the ‘Duracks’.

An innovative public school

An innovative public school

The current school population is approximately 490 with classes from Preschool to Year 6. The school enjoys an excellent reputation and our results compare well with local private schools. Our students achieve well academically, in the arts and in sports. Innovative teaching and learning programs provide opportunities for each child to develop into independent life-long learners.

Our aim

Our aim

We aim to make school a very positive experience for our students where enjoyment and wellbeing are as important as learning.

About our high quality learning environment

A high quality, dedicated teaching staff create a productive and safe learning environment. A Special Education Teacher and Special Education Support Assistants support students with special needs. A specialist teacher of the Arts teaches music and dance as well as conducting the school choir. In 2017 we have specialist teachers for Physical Education and Technologies.

Exciting programs include Japanese which is taught from Preschool to Year 6. In 2015 Durack Preschool was the only school in the NT that was selected to trial the learning of a second language (Japanese) as part of the national Early Years Learning Trial Australia. We have continued learning Japanese in Preschool throughout 2016 and 2017.

There are opportunities for students to participate in Challenge Clubs to extend their learning and provide authentic experiences in a variety of areas, such as writing, numeracy, science, history, computer coding and Japanese. A partnership with Golf NT and Tennis NT provides a development pathway through the school in these sports.

Our supportive community

The school has excellent facilities and is very well resourced due largely to the support of the school community.

Parents are partners in education

We believe in the importance of parents being partners in the education of their children, working together with the school to make the child's time a safe and positive experience.
