English

English encompasses the knowledge and skills students need to access, understand, analyse and evaluate information, make meaning, express thoughts and emotions, present ideas and opinions, interact with others and participate in activities at school and in their lives beyond school. A high level of competency in English enhances a student’s ability to develop into a creative thinker, well informed citizen and confident communicator.

The Australian Curriculum

The Australian Curriculum: English is the basis for programming and planning. The English curriculum is built around the three interrelated strands of Language, Literature and Literacy. Teaching and learning programs show balance and integration of all three strands. Together the three strands focus on developing students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating.

Resources and programs

Durack School uses various resources to support our English programs. A well-resourced library and ease with which students can access digital technology also enhances literacy teaching and learning.

Jolly Grammar

Teaches a wide range of language forms including the parts of speech, plurals, punctuation, and the tenses past, present, and future. It also teaches a wide range of spelling rules, including defining aspects such as the short vowels.

Jolly Phonics

A fun and child centered approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics. With actions for each of the 42 letter sounds, the multi-sensory method is very motivating for children and teachers, who can see their students achieve. The sounds are taught in a specific order (not alphabetically).

Home Reading Program

Home reading is encouraged for all age groups to develop the love of reading through including a mix of books being read ‘to’ children, ‘with’ children and ‘by’ children.

PM Writing
