Literacy

Literacy encompasses the knowledge and skills students need to access, understand, analyse and evaluate information, make meaning, express thoughts and emotions, present ideas and opinions, interact with others and participate in activities at school and in their lives beyond school. A high level of competency in English enhances a student’s ability to develop into a creative thinker, well informed citizen and confident communicator.

The Australian Curriculum

The Australian Curriculum: English is the basis for programming and planning. The English curriculum is built around the three interrelated strands of Language, Literature and Literacy. Teaching and learning programs show balance and integration of all three strands. Together the three strands focus on developing students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating.

The Literacy strand

Is about expanding the repertoire of skills that enable students to use and produce a range of text to learn and communicate confidently at school and in later life. These skills include listening to, reading, and viewing a variety of texts for different purposes, and speaking, writing and creating texts in print, visual and audio form accurately and purposefully, in a variety of formats, within and across all learning areas.

The Language strand

Knowing about the English language. This encompasses knowing about the structure and organisation of texts, Expressing and developing ideas, and the understanding of letter / sound knowledge, grammar, structures and features of English.

The Literature strand

Encompasses understanding and appreciating literature as well as responding to, analysing and creating literature.
