Preschool

Durack Preschool offers a program operating for 2 whole days every week and one half day on alternate weeks. Parents may enrol their child in the Monday / Tuesday program or the Wednesday / Thursday program depending the availability of places.

Starting the school journey

Preschool students begin their school journey in a highly supported, stimulating, play based learning environment. Opportunities are provided for students to develop an appreciation of and a desire for learning through play and investigation, student initiated and teacher prepared experiences.

Students in preschool visit the school library each week, participate in a sensory motor program, attend school assemblies and participate in other whole school events eg Sports Day.

Early Years Learning Framework

The framework aims to extend and enrich children’s learning and underpins the implementation for programs in preschool classes. The EYLF aims for the following outcomes:

  • Children have a strong sense of identity
  • Children are connected with and contribute to their world
  • Children have a strong sense of wellbeing
  • Children are confident and involved learners
  • Children are effective communicators.

The Early Years Learning Framework has an emphasis on play based learning.

Play based learning

Play based learning encourages learning through play with the teacher extending students learning by posing questions and encouraging oral language development.

Early languages learning

Durack Preschool is the only preschool in the Northern Territory to have been selected for the 2015 Early Languages Learning Australia (ELLA) trial. This national program introduces the Japanese language through apps on ipads. The apps are designed to engage young children through games and songs.
